Border collie loosing clumps of hair, whats the problem?
Sometimes, the losing of hair problem can occur because of not enough nutrition. If your dog is losing hearing of low tones, it is probably because of dirty ears. Cleaning the dog's ears at home is helpful but not effective enough. This loss of hearing can happen as the dog grows older and starts to care less about hygiene and because the ears are getting weaker due to aging. Younger dogs will scratch their ears a lot so they are free of itching and their ears are clean. My advice: take your border collie to the vet for an ear cleaning and nutrition check-up. If your dog turns out to have low nutrition, try giving another company of dog food with fresh and naturally flavoured meat and vegetables. Brush and comb his fur more so you can get rid of fleas, and dandruff that make the fur unhealthy (this can be done at the vet too) I hope this info helped!

This is Sam! You were wondering how to clean the dog's ears at home? Take a new tooth brush and just brush the outside and slight inner part. It brushes off any dirt or wax. Hope this helped! Report It

Take the dog to the vet. The hearing loss is probably just due to the dog's age, at 11 your dog is no spring chicken. I don't know about the hair loss though, that's why I feel a vet appt is in order. In my opinion, Old Roy dog food is crap, I would get a higher quality food like Wellness or Merrick--but neither are cheap and if you are feeding Old Roy, cheap is probably your style.

Take him to the vet for a check up, it could be anything at his age.
Also, switch him to a high quality food for Seniors - OLD ROY is like the McDonald's of dog food - McCrap!

That's pretty crappy food. Your dog is getting old, expect changes. The hearing loss is just a tribute to old age.
Check with your vet about the possibility of a mange fungus.
Wait, if you feed your dog one of the lowest quality foods on the market, you probably don't use a vet, if that's the case, if its scaly, use your favorite jock itch cream.
I beg of you to please add a nutricious wet food to your doggie's diet and get it's vaccinations up to date. Dogs are family, treat them as such.

My Border Collie lived to be 16, but started losing her hearing and eyesight at about 10.
First, though it may be more expensive, I would get a much healthier brand of dog food. Look for 6% or less of crude fat, foods with vitamins for bone and coat health, and foods with little to no dye in them. You can go as cheap as certain foods by Pedigree or as expensive as you want.
Second, border collies don't usually shed in clumps (as you probably know by now). When sick, dogs will often lose more hair than normal, and it can come out in clumps. It COULD just be old age, as dogs do lose their hair too, but I would definitely make an appointment for a physical for your pooch.
Also, I would suggest taking your dog out for 4-7 leisurely walks a week, if you are not already doing so.
