We have checked him for fleas...he has none! He is digging at himself so bad he is bleeding and missing hair on his back. This happened last year and all the vet done was gave him a steroid shot and it didn't help. That is all the vet can do. Does anyone have any good ideas??

You need to find a new vet. It could be allergies or a yeast infection. A good vet will keep trying.

My dog was doing the same thing (he is a pug) and I took him to the vet and they said they naturaly carry a form of mange that no other animal can get. Maybe you need to find out if that is possible. If you give him baths he may be allergic to the soap. Or your dog may have a nervous habit and need to get medication for that. Hope your dog gets better!!

My dog is doing the same thing. I took her to the vet and the vet said that there is a good chance it is due to something blooming in or near our yard. (We just moved recently.)

He suggested that we give the dog one Claritin pill per day. (It is a human over the counter drug.) She stopped chewing but when we stopped giving her the Claritin she started doing it again. We resumed the Claritin and she has been ok.

So chances are it is something in her environment. I'd try the giving your pup Claritin daily. Maybe you should give your vet a call before you start it though.

Depending on the dogs size 1 (one) benadrill can help with the itching. Has he been checked for mange? That is a common skin ailment that can be treated with special shampoo. Also try a non irritating shampoo you can get over the counter. The steroid shots wont help if it is mange. He sounds like he may have an allergy to something if not mange. Take him back to the vet, tell him that the shot did not help and have him tested for allergies. There are all kinds of great remedies for dogs now.

give him some benedryl. my dog has the same problem we also give her allergy shots. it ususally works after the 2nd dose. changing the diet can help. lamb and rice is good for their coat and skin. give him a good oatmeal bath it should soothe the pain.

Have you checked his skin, do you see any circles? He may have ring worm. You can try Lotrimin AF, it comes in an ointment or spray, or an old home remedy, use stick underarm deodorant. He could also have scabbies, which requires a lime dip. This is also very contagious to humans as well as other animals. I worked for the SPCA and have seen a lot of this.

Make sure you are not using human hair shampoo.It is toooo strong for your pet.Go to your local pet grooming shop and discuss this problem. No one knows pets better than a professional dog groomer.They sell excellent products for skin problem dogs. My ex- wife is a professional groomer with over 30 years experience. Sounds like allergies. Going to vet would be first step. I would go to a different vet than the one described in your question. You could try a hypallergenic food also. I heard that those help with similar conditions. You could also check with breed experts and see if this is common in your breed.

Same thing that happens to most of us during dry months or hin just scratching too much! He may have dry skin. Try using a good conditioner on him. Yes one you would trust and use on your hair. Trust me, our Labrador had dry flaky skin and we used Garnier for Permed and Color treated hair, she not only is flaky free she has a shiny coat to go along w/it. The first time u use it on your dog, it may burn(just like it does on ours when we have dry skin!), but it does work. Actually, you could work your way up from Dove Moisturizing soap to Garnier Shampoo and Conditioner. I know it isn't what vet's would recommend, but hey it's a heck of alot cheaper and killes fleas too! Good Luck!

I was told to use rice and lamb type dog food. I use one with high folic acid instead of giving him a extra pill. Sometimes if his itch is really bad I give him a small amt of a benadryl product. I also will use spray bactine when i can see his skin is real irriated. But I would check all this out with your vet.
