I caught my maltese dog eating his pooh,i fed him twice or three times a day.what do you think is the problem?
Coprophagia or stool eating can be caused by several different conditions. Vitamin and dietary deficiencies occur in a small percentage of dogs and in some cases vitamin supplements will alleviate this problem. Some veterinarians believe that dogs consume their stools in the early stages of anemia. If your dog is older this should be something to have your veterinarian test for. Also hookworms can cause stool eating so that possibility should be checked into. Some medications may cause a dog to participate in Coprophagia as well. Inflammatory Bowel Disease pancreatic problems and various other medical abnormalities can all be the cause for stool eating. Therefore it is best to have your pet thoroughly examined by your veterinarian to rule out any illnesses. Additionally some dogs eat their stools due to a behavior problem; they are trying to hide their scent. If your dog is otherwise healthy then one solution to stopping thisbehavior is to add a supplement to the dog's food which will make the stools taste bad to him while providing a nutritional supplement. Forbid is one of many products that effectively breaks the stool-eating cycle.

Well if it;s outside I think that you should clean up his poop more frequently. It's just a dog thing they're kinda nasty animals, but I'll never stop loving my dust-bunny eater!

Isn't it because they get good things (Nutritional stuff) that cannot be digested at first, they gotta get it the other time around.

I could be a sign of poor nutrition, but it's hard to tell because I don't know what your feeding. Check the ingredients of the food, if it contains any by-products, corn, wheat, soy, cellulose, rendered animal fat or bone meal then it's a bad food. Stay away from anything that you can get from the grocery store, nearly all of those foods were involved in that terrible recall last March. Here is a list of good foods to consider feeding:
- Wellness
- Canidae
- Natural Balance
- Innova/Evo
- Solid Gold
- APD (Advanced Pet Diet)
Hopefully this helps, and make sure you pick up his poop right away before he has a chance to eat it. If you have any other questions email me at katielovesreading@gmail.com.
P.S. If this still continues after you have made these changes, try a product called "Forbid". It's known to be pricey but it works extremely well from what I've heard. Good luck!

I believe dogs do that due to a lack of something in their system, I'd call the vet and ask.

This unpleasant dog behavior is known as coprophagia, the rather distasteful habit that compels some dogs to eat their own and other dogs' feces.
The good news is your dog will probably outgrow it 閳?as most dogs do. But until she does, there is not much you can do about it.
While you are waiting for your dog to improve her culinary tastes, immediately clean up any feces, and keep your dog on a leash to limit her access to it. Also keep her on a monthly deworming medication and heartworm preventive.
With regard to diet, there are numerous products that you can sprinkle on your dog's food to discourage coprophagia, but there is little evidence of how effective they are.
Ultimately, keeping your dog away from any feces, her own or another dog閳ユ獨, will help her outgrow this habit.

Some dogs are attracted to their own poop, but it is not normal and you should not allow the behavior. Especially if you give this dog affection and allow it to kiss you or other family members or friends. I suggest you "bite" the dog the moment you notice its interest in the poop. Doing so will snap s/he out of it. The more you monitor his potty runs and correct the unwanted behavior, the quicker you should see wanted results.
Also, walks should be daily. At least 45 minutes in the morning, or an hour spread out throughout the day. This time is minimum. The longer the walks, the more exercise and tiring he'll be to want to cause havoc or unwanted behavior. Also, remember not to give affection when he's done something you don't appreciate. Affection is not just touching, but verbal. A dog should never be hit or kicked or spanked, but your verbal tone gives him notice of what is good and what is bad.

Sometimes it is because they are lacking a certain amount of vitamins. For others they can smell the food they ate so they re-eat it. If this is the reason and it not because a vitamin deficiency it becomes habit. So get him checked by your Vet and rule out the vitamin issue. Than when you see him it do it tell him no or he will always do it.

First off a dog needs to be walked more then just weekends. At least once a day.
A dog eats its own poo when they are fed food that is does not have any nutritional value. Try another brand, dry food preferably. The dog eats the food you are giving it and then it goes right through the dog (think white castle here :) ) and then the dog smell the poo and it smells just like the food he/she just ate. That is why they do it.

There is a powder you can get from your vet that will help stop this behavior. You add it to their food, and it gives the poo an "unpleasant" taste. My dog did that when he was a pup, and the powder stopped it pretty quickly.

I have 2 Maltese, they BOTH do it too... per the vet, it has NOTHING to do with diet, the amount of walks, or how he is treated. PLEASE, it is not a behavior issue, they dont know it is wrong, it canine nature, you have to teach them not to do it
. It is something they just do, most grow out, mine are 2 years old, and still havent. The obvious thing to do is clean their poop up immediately and sternly say "no" anytime they perform this, or go near it. I have tried just about everything product wise UNDER THE SUN to stop it... I just am diligent about cleaning up after them, and disciplining them, and they seem to have at least stop doing it ALL the time....
GOOD LUCK
