We want a small one (small enough to fit in the doggy strollers), but one that is protective. One that does not bark unless there is trouble. Either short haired or one that looks good when you groom it to have short hair. Thank you for your help!

Go to your local shelter and take a look at the dogs available! Many dogs need homes and they are all shapes and sizes!
You can also go on www.petfinder.com and search your local area on there.
Good luck!

How about a stuffed toy dog. I have not heard of a dog that will not bark unless there is trouble. This is not in the dogs nature. You are living a dream if you think a small dog won't bark and can protect you from something big like a prowler.

Wheaton Terriers are great dogs, don't bark too much and don't really shed!

Small dogs bark ALL of the time. It is sooo true. They are yappers!! Corgi's don't bark as much, but that is the only requirement that fits what you want.

good luck finding a dog that doesn't bark unless there's trouble. most little dogs will try to protect their owner but they're not intimidating to someone trying to break in.

If you can train it well enough, a Shiba Inu is perfectly protective. But, they tend to be yippy dogs if they are untrained or bored. These little things are pure muscle, but little lap dogs. They are wonderfully sweet :) If you get past their ornery side.

i have a german shepherd/rottweiler mix and she's the sweetest and awesome!!!

you're gonna have a really hard time finding a little dog that doesn't bark. i hear that chihuahuas can be protective but they bark a lot. i have 2 malteses and one barks a lot, but the other will only bark when the doorbell rings. they are protective though and have short hair and don't shed. they are also great with kids and a wonderful companion.

Terriers are good breeds and come in a varitey of shapes, sizes and coat legnths. I personally have two miniature schnauzers and they are great and look good with a relatively short hair cut. I groom their backs with a 10 and their legas with a 4 and they stay nice for a while. Another good terrier is a Rat terrier. All dogs bark you have to train them to only bark when danger is near. Good luck

If you are planning to get a dog as an accessory for a doggie stroller, save yourself--and the poor dog--the humiliation. Just get yourself a barbie doll. And let's face it: a dog in a stroller is not going to be taken seriously anyway.
Dogs shouldn't be used for protection...it's not their job to protect you, and people who encourage their dogs to be protective often end up with a lawsuit on their hands when the dog bites someone undeserving.

Miniature Scnhawzers are good dogs. I have 2.

Well... they are not small but they are thee most amazing breed of dog Gordon Setter, they are balck and brown amazing family dogs, great guard dogs, and they look like rottweilers except with floppy ears and a good temper so they scare anyone on sight if they don't know who it is. Great Dog, breeder in wisconsin Peggy... I have a gordon setter from her and I am getting 2 more!

Sounds like you want a small, short-haired Lassie. Did Timmy fall in the well?

Barking habits are particular to each dog. Go to the local humane society, pick the one you think is cutest and spend some time with it. Good luck!

Either miniature poodle or schnauzer, they are very protective of their family and look good when groomed.
What type of dog should we get?
I have a miniature schnauzer who is so loveable and a great dog..I have read a lot that they are not really "lap dogs", but my dog is the total opposite! She LOVES to be in someone's lap especially mine...Also, My mom has a shih tzu who is also really great! Her oldest one, who died recently was bought for my little sister who was severely handicapped..She would have seizures and stop breathing sometimes..The dog would go and sit with her while she was having one and if she would stop breathing, she would run to "alert" someone..Also my little sister had a movement disorder and was constantly moving and kicking and "Ma'Leigh" would just lay there and NEVER moved or was aggressive towards her in any way..My sister was her "girl"..My little sister passed away about 2 1/2 yrs ago and when that happened the dog went into a deep depression...I would definately suggest the Shih Tzu...They are very loyal and devoted dogs and willing to make you happy...AWESOME with children..Make sure to socialize ANY breed that you decide to go with..MANY people, places, animals from "puppyhood"
I would also suggest that you go to dogbreedinfo.com and research there..It will tell you the breed's temperment, height, weight, history and a few other things..If you have small children, I would not suggest a "toy" breed, as they are so fragile..I wanted a yorkie, but I do have a 2 yr old so that turned me away from them.
Here is a list of small dogs ranging up to 20 pounds..(do a "find the perfect dog" search and then scroll down to size or photo to see pictures..You can then click on the pics and read their information

What fun!
Why, you just described my dog! A Jack Russell, she is, protective but not aggressive, barks only when someone is at the door or there is trouble, and though I see many many dog strollers in the parks I ride my horses at,the breeds are too numerous to list. My Jack is low shed, loves grooming, playing fetch, and a monthly bath with oatmeal shampoo. I pluck her coat if it needs thinning, and as agreed by the** VERY GOOD BREEDER** I purchased from, spayed and shown in obedience, and also received her AKC KGC(Canine Good Citizen) certificate too. With a solid training background and a great breeder to start, I got the best dog possible, and you can, too. Good luck in your search!* saw the cutest! Papillion in a stroller just last week..and a darling Pug..and.. :) check this link out:http://www.terrier.com/
