Why does my dog have sooooo much tear staining?

i cut her eyelashes as short as i can

no hair that i see goes into her eyes

UGGGG

Why does my dog have sooooo much tear staining?

Don't cut the eyelashes....not necessary.

Some breeds are prone, there are small lotion bottles in most pet shops, Diamond eyes and Pretty eyes....you just put some on cotton wool and wipe gently under the eye to take the staining off, can take a week or so if not used before.

You could also use plain water on a cotton ball if it is not much.

Also, I have read that it can possibly be an allergy to food or colourants in food....maybe try changing to a food with not artificial additives, colourants etc....

If that doesn't work after a few months, try one without wheat or eggs etc...

If that doesn't work after a few months then maybe your dog is just prone to it.

Oh I noticed sometimes when I clean the laminate, if the dogs are around, they have wet under their eyes, I always put them in another room now and wait till the floor is dry before letting them in, also I am now cleaning the laminate with a product that will disinfect but without phenols, that can be dangerous for pets...the pet store should have home cleaning products that are safe for pets.

If you smoke that could be irritating the eyes, also air freshners etc...aromatherapy oils etc....

Just a few things I have found, hope this helps.

There are several breeds that have eye discharge staining. It's normal. I don't believe it has anything to do with hair in her eyes and I don't think you should be cutting her eyelashes. Have you spoken to a vet? You may also want to read about your breed on the internet.

All dogs tear, light colored or white dogs show it more. The only thing you can do is to wipe the stains with a warm cloth every day, or some pet stores carry a tear stain remover. Check for irritants like dust, if the dog is around a lot of dust it can cause tearing.

I have a dog that has the same problem. The Vet said it has to do with her own body fluids. A friend said it had to do with red dye in dog foods and treats. I stopped giving her anything made with red dye and it has helped.

Why would you cut her eyelashes? I don't think that has anything to do with tear staining...

All you're doing by cutting her eyelashes is leaving them more susceptible to things getting into her eye.

Shampoos will get rid of some of the staining. Talk to your vet...she may have allergies...I give mine a Benadryl twice a day

what kind of dog is it....

Maltese are a fickle little dog and things in their diets can make their tears bad.

Stress does it too.

Or ask your vet to see if she has a fungal or bacterial infection causing lots of tears.

DAILY washing of the area helps reduce the stains...

It could be the food your feeding. Sometimes if the ingredients contain Beet pulp that can cause the tear stains. But it could also be genetic.
