Why is my dog's chin and feet pinkish?

I have a Westie and I have noticed that under his chin and on his feet, his fur has a pinky orange colouring to it. It is clear to see that it is most definately NOT white.

We have had advice before which include not giving him oily food such as fish and some kinds of meat. He also eats dry food with natural colourings which we were told would help. He has had his hair trimmed around his mouth but the problem STILL persists.

What do we do!? I have seen all these brilliant white Westies on Crufts, but why does mine look nothing like them?

Thank you.

Well you know how that previous answerer said that show dogs are bathed once every week (and i'm not critisising her answer...which is quite good) its just don't try bathing your dog once a week if you want him to be show dog quality its best to bathe your dog once a fortnight-once a month.Overwashing your dog can lead to flaky and itchy skin( skin irratation). It may just be natural colouring or tear stains... My auntie has a white poodle who cries alot and get tear stains on his chin too.... weird.Try feeding your dog sardines, one in each meal or so. It helps your dogs coat to be shiny and healthy. Remember all dogs don't look all the same as their breed is suppost to look.. i have a purebred mini poodle from a chamion line who has pricked up ears that are brown and the rest of the body is Apricot?! LOL

A dog's saliva has a natural red pigment. As a dog gets older the fur gets more stained.

Show dogs are bathed at least once a week, have their fur bleached and powdered then all sorts of preparations and restrictions are used to prevent fur getting dirty.

Don't compare your dog to a show dog, yours most likely has a fun life and is allowed to get dirty.

It is from moisture and the fur is simply stained. You have to wipe them down after every meal, drink, romp in the outdoors, etc. and bathe them frequently to get that look.

If you are not showing, then I would not worry about it one bit.

It is not harmful to the dog and personally I would rather spend my time playing with the pup than constantly wiping it down! Let your pup be a pup and let yourself enjoy him!

Now it depends if you are talking about the SKIN on his chin and feet being that color or just the fur. If just the fur than it is just staining and usually once stained it is difficult if not impossible to get rid of, just make sure you bathe regularly and wipe down the face an paws after eating. If it is the skin that is reddish, than it could be yeast. You can treat that with an antibiotic from a vet. It could also be possibly mites or another parasite. The only way to know for sure is to take your pup to a vet and have them do a skin scraping. Good luck.
