Please help don't know what kind of dog to get?

Hi I would love to finally own a dog but not sure what breed to get. I know I want something small, that dosent shed alot of hair, or yaps because I work from home as a therapist, I live in a medium sized house and have a communal garden. I would love it for my 5 year old son who gets lonely so walks to the park and throwing a ball with it would be great! does anyone have any suggestions??

how about a corgi? They are a small/medium sized dog. If you are looking for a purebreed, check out the AKC website. They not only have a list of purebreeds, but it had their common characteristics, potential medical problems etc.

Most all small dogs Yelp!

I would go for a more medium size dog.

If not large. To me your large dogs are so much

better.

A yellow lab. or hound mix.

Hound mixes are very smart and loyal and adorable!

and they don't YELP and their hair is not too long!

so there you go

Hound mix!

I would suggest a chihuahua/dachsund mix. I have one that I bought for my son 2 years ago. He was 4 yrs old at the time. If you were to ask my son his dog is his best friend. She is wonderful with him. I couldn't have chosen a better dog. I recently got another dog and I'm not so sure that I made a good choice this time. I got a Chocolate Labrador. I have found that she is way to big for my son. She is now 40 pounds (3 months old) and overpowers my son. She doesn't get along very well with the smaller dog. I wouldn't suggest getting a chihuahua for your child because they can be tempermental. I have found though with the mix between chihuahua/dachsund they seem to be wonderful dogs.. Goodluck.

baby please visit your local animal shelter--don't set your mind to just owning a pure breed----mutts will luv u just as well if not even MORE......

I think a dog in the 20 lb. range would be a good choice. The smaller dogs, although quite cute, are mostly very "yappy." Why don't you and your son go to a shelter near you and pick out a dog (or let the dog pick you!) together? This would be a great experience for ALL concerned. Also, you might find a slightly older dog would be a good choice.

Lhasa Apsos are great and so is a chihuahua/sheba enu (spelling?) mix.

Lhasas are great with kids and very loving and the chihuahua/sheba enu mix is also great but a bit hyperactive when excited but my sisters chi/sh mix loves kids and gives everyone tons of kisses

i love Boston terriers very very small amount of shedding and does not bark alot

i know you probably don't want to hear this but a bulldog is a very good option for you they are very laid back and good with kids. I recommend a male because they are cheaper and a little more mellow than the females are. Please research your choice before you get your dog. The bulldog is also shorthaired

If you don't know what "things" in a dog you want, then I would suggest not getting one until you can identify them for yourself.

As a "therapist," you should know that...

I shudder to think you're giving other's advice.

There is a site on the Internet that rates you and the kind of dog you want and I am not sure which one it is....but they take you through a question and answer thing just like these dating questionnaire's and slowly you will begin to find out what type of dog you will need to get (for you)! They narrow it down to just a few and then you pick the one that's of your liking! I wish I could remember which link it is but I can't. But; poodles and miniature schnauzers don't shed at all, and they are great as inside dogs and good with kids. They are also very entertaining as well. You ask a good question on here, it was refreshing to try to answer you back!! The person under me is right on...she has the answer. Thats the site I went too. It will help you pick your dog. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I'm sorry but if a shelter wouldn't approve you, no reputable breeder will either. You don't have a fenced yard which is a big stumbling block as far as you getting a dog. Perhaps at this point you need to find some other type of pet for your son. A dog needs a fenced yard - that's basic, tying them up is extremely bad for their temperaments and they need exercise.

There is no one breed that is suitable.Individuals within a breed vary even individuals within a litter vary. A lot depends on the breeding, socialization and training. Even though you didn't pass the home check once don't rule out a shelter or adopting . Fins out exactly what you didn't pass on and if possible fix the problems if not check with other shelters and rescues. If you do go with a breeder go with a responsible, reputable, ethical breeder. You need to be very careful since there are more irresponsible breeders then there are responsible ones. Look for one who does pedigree research before breeding, does health testing of parents (not just vet exams) before breeding, socializes puppies and parents, has a genuine interest in the breed, doesn't delibrately breed mixes, breeds to the breed standard (neither breeding too small or too big), gives first vaccinations, deworming and vet exams to all puppies before they go to new homes, doesn't sell puppies under 8 weeks of age has paperwork all in order, etc. Be ware of puppies sold as "registered" that have papers from CKC (Continental or Canine Kennel Club), ACA (American Canine Association),WW (Worldwide kennel Club), among others. These are scam registries and their papers aren't worth the paper they are written on. They are registries set up by irresponsible breeders %26amp; puppy mills in order to register anything with 4 legs and make people believe they are getting a registered purebred puppy/dog.

Labs make wonderful companions for children and adults. Mine have always been very watchful over us. And you would not have to pay a lot of money to have them groomed. Good luck, wagging tails and wet puppy kisses to you. And they love to fetch and play ball.

Please help don't know what kind of dog to get?

I have had many many dogs in the past and the ones i have listed below were some of my favorites of my favorites( when are alot).

Toy breeds-

Toy Rat Terrier- Great dog. Very loyal, easy to train, miminal grooming needed. The Rat Terrier comes in a variety of coat colors and patterns. It is often white with either black and tan, apricot, blue, or brown spots. The most common color is the tricolor: black, tan, and white. Many have ticking on the white part of the coat; most have freckles on their bellies. Ear carriage can be upright, tipped, or button, and the tail is traditionally docked to about 1/3 of its original length.

The Rat Terrier ranges from about 5 to 40 pounds, although the larger sizes are sometimes called Deckers or Decker Giants, after a breeder named Milton Decker who has been developing a larger version of the Rat Terrier. The Toy size (10 pounds and under) is becoming increasingly popular as a house pet %26amp; companion dog. Despite their diminutive size, many Toy Rat Terriers display the same prey drive %26amp; hunting instincts as their larger cousins.

Temperament

Although often mistaken for a Jack Russell Terrier, the Rat Terrier has a very different temperament. It is less aggressive and comparatively calm (although still exhibiting terrier personality). They are normally cheerful dogs, but there are occasional dogs who are extremely sensitive to changes in their environment or to unexpected noises, people, or activity. They can be, however, extremely bonded to and protective of their owners.

When searching for a Rat Terrier be sure to find a breeder who does temperment testing to determine if the individual dog will suit your home and family. Rescuing a Rat Terrier is a good alternative to contributing to the sometimes cruel breeding process. If looking for a rescue Rat Terrier be sure to ask lots of questions about the dog you are looking at. Answer all questions that the rescue organization asks you so that they can determine the right fit for you.

History

The Rat Terrier type originated in England; like all terriers of this type, it most likely developed from crosses among Manchester Terriers, Smooth Fox Terriers, and Whippets. After the 1890s, as the breed type became popular in America, other breeds were added to the mix. Beagles and Italian Greyhounds may have been used.

Breed recognition

Rat Terrier organizations rank among those in the dog world among which there is dispute over the best course of action to be taken for the promotion and preservation of the dog breed. Points of departure are, as usual, which dog type best represents the breed, and, as is common among working breeds, whether the dog's working qualities will be sacrificed to show conformation. Perhaps because the Rat Terrier has existed for decades with several different evident types being upheld by different clubs, disagreements can be highly charged.

The Rat Terrier has been recognized by the United Kennel Club. The Rat Terrier Club of America is actively working towards recognition by the AKC and the breed was accepted into the AKC's Foundation Stock Service in 2005. The first Rat Terrier to earn a title under AKC Sanctioning was in Agility on January 14, 2006 in Van Nuys CA. Like Rat Terriers, Jack russel terriers are also very good dogs. I am sure you have seen the movie My Dog Skip? It was one of the reasons the rat terriers and jack russel terriers and similar dogs to them so popular today.

Another good dog is a Shiba Inu. Here is a little bit of info for them. They were origninally a Japanese hunting dog. They look like a small akita. In fact they are part of the Spitz family. More in depth. The Shiba is the smallest of the Japanese native breeds of dog and was originally developed for hunting by sight and scent in the dense undergrowth of Japan's mountainous areas. Alert and agile with keen senses, he is also an excellent watchdog and companion. His frame is compact with well-developed muscles. Males and females are distinctly different in appearance: males are masculine without coarseness, females are feminine without weakness of structure.

Size, Proportion, Substance

Males 14闄?inches to 16闄?inches at withers. Females 13闄?inches to 15闄?inches. The preferred size is the middle of the range for each sex. Average weight at preferred size is approximately 23 pounds for males, 17 pounds for females. Males have a height to length ration of 10 to 11, females slightly longer. Bone is moderate. Disqualification--Males over 16闄?inches in dogs and under 14闄?inches. Females over 15闄?inches and under 13闄?inches.

Head

Expression is good natured with a strong and confident gaze. Eyes are somewhat triangular in shape, deep set, and upward slanting toward the outside base of the ear. Iris is dark brown. Eye rims are black. Ears are triangular in shape, firmly pricked and small, but in proportion to head and body size. Ears are set well apart and tilt directly forward with the slant of the back of the ear following the arch of the neck. Skull size is moderate and in proportion to the body. Forehead is broad and flat with a slight furrow. Stop is moderate. Muzzle is firm, full, and round with a stronger lower jaw projecting from full cheeks. The bridge of the muzzle is straight. Muzzle tapers slightly from stop to nose tip. Muzzle length is 40% of the total head length from occiput to nose tip. It is preferred that whiskers remain intact. Lips are tight and black. Nose is black. Bite is scissors, with a full complement of strong, substantial, evenly aligned teeth.

Serious Fault: Five or more missing teeth is a very serious fault and must be penalized.

Disqualification--Overshot or undershot bite.

Neck, Topline and Body

Neck is thick, sturdy, and of moderate length. Topline is straight and level to the base of the tail. Body is dry and well muscled without the appearance of sluggishness or coarseness. Forechest is well developed. Chest depth measured from the withers to the lowest point of the sternum is one-half or slightly less than the total height from withers to ground. Ribs are moderately sprung. Abdomen is firm and well tucked-up. Back is firm. Loins are strong. Tail is thick and powerful and is carried over the back in a sickle or curled position. A loose single curl or sickle tail pointing vigorously toward the neck and nearly parallel to the back is preferred. A double curl or sickle tail pointing upward is acceptable. In length the tail reaches nearly to the hock joint when extended. Tail is set high.

Forequarters

Shoulder blade and upper arm are moderately anuglated and approximately equal in length. Elbows are set close to the body and turn neither in nor out. Forelegs and feet are moderately spaced, straight, and parallel. Pasterns are slightly inclined. Removal of front dewclaws is optional. Feet are catlike with well-arched toes fitting tightly together . Pads are thick.

Hindquarters

The angulation of the hindquarters is moderate and in balance with the angulation of the forequarters. Hind legs are strong with a wide natural stance. The hock joint is strong, turning neither in nor out. Upper thighs are long and the second thighs short but well developed. No dewclaws. Feet as in forequarters.

Coat

Double coated with the outer coat being stiff and straight and the undercoat soft and thick. Fur is short and even on face, ears, and legs. Guard hairs stand off the body are about 1闄?to 2 inches in length at the withers. Tail hair is slightly longer and stands open in a brush. It is preferred that the Shiba be presented in a natural state. Trimming of the coat must be severely penalized. Serious Fault--Long or woolly coat.

Color

Coat color is as specified herein, with the three allowed colors given equal consideration. All colors are clear and intense. The undercoat is cream, buff or gray.

Urajiro (cream to white ventral color) is required in the following areas on all coat colors: on the sides of the muzzle, on the cheeks, inside the ears, on the underjaw and upper throat inside of legs, on the abdomen, around the vent and the ventral side of the tail. On reds: commonly on the throat, forechest, and chest. On blacks and sesames: commonly as a triangular mark on both sides of the forechest. White spots above the eyes permitted on all colors but not required.

Bright orange-red with urajiro lending a foxlike appearance to dogs of this color. Clear red preferred but a very slight dash of black tipping is permitted on the back and tail.

Black with tan points and urajiro. Black hairs have a brownish cast, not blue. The undercoat is buff or gray. The borderline between black and tan areas is clearly defined. Tan points are located as follows: two oval spots over the eyes: on the sides of the muzzle between the black bridge of the muzzle and the white cheeks; on the outside of the forelegs from the carpus, or a little above, downward to the toes; on the outside of the hind legs down the front of the stifle broadening from hock joint to toes, but not completely eliminating black from rear of pasterns. Black penciling on toes permitted. Tan hairs may also be found on the inside of the ear and on the underside of the tail.

Sesame (black-tipped hairs on a rich red background) with urajiro. Tipping is light and even on the body and head with no concentration of black in any area. Sesame areas appear at least one-half red. Sesame may end in a widow's peak on the forehead, leaving the bridge and sides of the muzzle red. Eye spots and lower legs are also red.

Clearly delineated white markings are permitted but not required on the tip of the tail and in the form of socks on the forelegs to the elbow joint, hind legs to the knee joint. A patch of blaze is permitted on the throat, forechest, or chest in addition to urajiro.

Serious fault--Cream, white pinto, or any other color or marking not specified is a very serious fault and must be penalized.

Gait

Movement is nimble, light, and elastic. At the trot, the legs angle in towards a center line while the topline remains level and firm. forward reach and rear extension are moderate and efficient. In the show ring, the Shiba is gaited on a loose lead at a brisk trot.

Temperament

A spirited boldness, a good nature, and an unaffected forthrightness, which together yield dignity and natural beauty. The Shiba has an independent nature and can be reserved toward strangers but is loyal and affectionate to those who earn his respect. At times aggressive toward other dogs, the Shiba is always under the control of his handler. Any aggression toward handler or judge or any overt shyness must be severely penalized.

Summary

The foregoing is a description of the ideal Shiba. Any deviation from the above standard is to be considered a fault and must be penalized. The severity of the fault is equal to the extent of the deviation. A harmonious balance of form, color, movement, and temperament is more critical than any one feature.

Disqualifications

Males over 16闄?and under 14闄?inches.

Females over 15闄?and under 13闄?inches.

Overshot or undershot bite.

The Shiba Inu has a harsh, straight coat that is short in length. Dead hair should be removed by brushing with a firm bristle brush. Because the coat is naturally waterproof, baths should be given only when absolutely necessary. This dog is a seasonally heavy shedder and may require extra attention at those times.

I could go on and on about some very good dog breeds but i will describe one more because i have already wrote too much! Designer dogs( I am sure you might have heard of them, they are currently the newest trend)

Designer dogs are really just "mutts" that can be regestered like the "purebred" dogs agencys like AKC and UKC. Have you noticed that there are alot of poodles mixes lately? Like.... Poogle..poodle and beagle mixed. Poodles are desired because they don't shed and many breeders want that in other dogs. American Canine Hybrid Club recognizes many of these crosses which are generally just between two purerbred dogs but sometimes can have three. Also before I go, even though you have tried the animal shelter, there are certain dog breeds(say terrier) that are privately owned. Also check your ad for dogs in need of homes or such. Hope this was of some help to you.

Miniature Poodle

Althought you need to keep it brushed, poodles are hypoallergenic. If your having people come over for therapy then it may do you well to have a dog that others wont be allergic to.

Because they grow HAIR not fur, they don't shed much and you can keep them trimmed at the Dog Groom every month.

Miniature Poodles are GREAT pets and very loyal, dont bark or yip much (except to tell you someone's at the door), and they are a great childs companion.
