i have a 2 year old long hair chihuahua that has constipation all the time her stool is so dry it is even powdery at times. any ideas on what causes this and what might help it? she doesnt show signs of distress but it cant be comfortable!!
My dog is constipated?
Does she drink enough water? Also try feeding her a teaspoon or two of canned pumpkin (not the pie mix, just plain canned pumpkin). She probably needs to be seen by the vet though, as this sounds like an ongoing problem.
My dog is constipated?
feed a high quality dry kibble ( canidae is good choice) and make sure she has UNLIMITED access to fresh drinking water at all times.. also,, try giving her some more exercise

you should take her to the vet. it could be a serious sign of a bowel condition that might kill her eventually. the two greatest influences on bowel movement are LOTS of water and LOTS of fiber. its hard to make dogs get enough of these though but the vet will be of more help.
My dog is constipated?
she needs more fiber.. I have a possum w/ bowel problems.. you can buy "fiberall" its in the pharmacy part at wal-mart.. spinkle it over her food.. in the mean time.. give her a teaspoon of pancake syrup.. u can put in in her canned food also. :)
My dog is constipated?
She needs more fiber in her diet, not getting enough water to drink, and even not being able to have the chance to poop when she actually needs to... holding it too long.
Give her some nice fresh vegetables, and take her for a LOOOOOONG walk.. Usually walking will work up a nice poop.. But you have to give her more chance to poop, and make sure she always has lots of fresh clean water. Add some Omega 3 oils to her diet.
My dog is constipated?
1) not eating enough
2)not enough liquid
3)not enough fiber or oils in diet
try giving laxatone or a cat hairball formula ointment/paste, long haired dogs get hairballs too.
My dog is constipated?
she needs fibre. feed her fruits and veges as dessert! i give my dogs fruits all the time! and they make great dog treats!
My dog is constipated?
Try giving her can pumpkin that should help her.Even a vet will tell you that it works both ways with constipation and diarrhea

I have a 1/2 breed that has problems with the anal gland. The vet said that Chihuahuas are prone to problems like this. In your dogs case offer the following things, place a small amount of Corn oil on her food. Mix in some shredded carrots and offer a dog biscuit that is high in fiber. Get the dog to take in as much water as possible. You can offer a small amount of Bacon drippings as well. On dry food add a Little water, with an increase in natural fiber it should start softening. Maybe even try a few pieces of a fiber enriched cereal for humans as a treat. Do not offer Raisins or Dates they can be deadly for dogs! The only fruit you can offer is Blue Berries which are high in fiber or a slice of apple. My dogs love baby carrots cold from the fridge and that has fiber. Good luck with your baby, I'm not sure which is worse watching them strain or drag their Bottoms. We just have to keep them as comfy as possible. Good luck

I have a papillon thats also chronically constipated. The poor dear wpuld crab walk around forever trying to poop.
I started adding a few things to her diet. Canned pumpkin is excellent as a fiber source, so is low salt canned green beans, or a little rice. I add a teaspoon or so a day of plain yogurt with live cultures in it to her food. This will giver her digestive system a boost, as well as her immune system. Raw or cooked carrots are also good, Try carrots as a treat to chew on. I also add a little olive oil, for your tiny baby probably 1/2 teaspoon is plenty.
I recently started home cooking all my dogs feed because of the food scare. because the recipe i use contains a lot of veggies and rice, all constipation issues have stopped.
