Best way to brush a dog who hates being brushed????

i have a 4 year old pekingese who obviously has alot of hair lol. her hear gets lots of mats in it and it is difficult to brush her.

well mainly all the tangles are because we dont brush her much b/c she hates it. she gets her mean growl shows her teeth and tries to bite us or the brush (you should see the brush tons of tiny teeth marks lol)

so my question is how can we brush her regularly and get her not to be mean?

(shes a very fiesty dog lol)

LOL my puppy HATES it too. My vet advised to make it a "routine", it could work for you too because she's small, to put her up on the counter so she doesn't think you're trying to "play" on the floor with her. Put her leash on, and get someone to help you hold her and give her treats while you brush. Try to make it as quick as possible. So if you do it every day, it won't take as long as if you only do it once a month lol. By making it a regular daily routine, she'll eventually come to realize that there's no point in fighting it. Good luck! This seems to have worked with my puppy.

you have to be firm, if you let her attack the brush it will only get worse, sometimes it helps, they have brushes that are on gloves so the dog thinks you are petting it

good luck

Since she tries to bite you, it'd be best to use a muzzle while brushing her. You can get a muzzle at any pet store.

She will get used to the brushing after a few times and then you won't have to use the muzzle anymore.

Also, let her smell the brush before you begin brushing her and let her get used to it.

Start by just doing a little at a time. You can't let her win by growling and biting. Once you've started, just to a little, then when she has calmed down with the brush touching her, stop. Then reward the calm behavior with a treat. Of course you've already rewarded her by stopping shortly after the calm behavior. Over time you will be able to brush all of her without complaint.

My poms actually get excited when they see the brish now. They know it means a treat when they are done. They are just so smart!!

You'll have to get her accustomed to the brush again, in stages. In the beginning, don't even brush her - show her the brush, and give her a very nice treat like cheese or chicken. Reduce her food so she doesn't get fat.

If and only if she is ok with this, then progress to moving the brush NEAR her, again use treats. Don't brush her.

If and only if she is ok with this, then progress to putting the brush ON her - don't brush her. Use treats.

As before, progress slowly, and then brush a tiny, tiny bit, like one stroke, and stop. Give treats. Don't rush it.

You get the idea? Go slowly. That will be the hardest part. If you rush it, you have to back track until she is ok. Each step will take a few days, depending on how much she dislikes handling.

Good luck!

Consider taking her to a groomer for a shorter clip that's easier to maintain. Unless you are showing her, there's no need for a super long coat.

She doesn't like the brushing because chances are her coat is matted and the pulling hurts.

Start slow, do short sessions and give her treats and praise when she cooperates. Don't try and do it all in one session.

Work on it for a short time each day, continuing with small treats and praise for cooperation. The key is to go slow.

Get a grooming table and put her on it with a lead so she can't jump off. Have a family member stand in the room and make soothing noises. Start brushing and every once in awhile give her a fav treat. If she growls or tries to bite, say SHHHHH, really loud. (Wear gloves)

Work slowly, begin by giving her a bit of a massage. Every day for awhile give her a massage and add a bit of brushing eventually. Touch her feet and ears, give her attention and focus on that at first, slowly over time brush a little. Each day add a little more brushing time. If she snaps or bares her teeth tell her no and continue on with the massage and or grooming.

You should be able to work eventually towards brushing her all over. You should be in a very calm state when doing this. Not angry, scared or nervous. Make sure your dog has been exercised or played with beforehand. After each session, give the dog a treat or play with her.

If you want to teach your dog how to accept grooming you are going to have to work on building trust first, and then desensitize her to the brushing.

If you think about this from a human point of view, it's easier to understand that your dog is simply defending herself against something that she doesn't like. We would be no different if someone kept doing things to us that hurt or we didn't like.

This has nothing to do with "dominance" this has to do with a dog that has never been taught to enjoy grooming.

For some dogs, it can take only one scary experience to become 閳ユ笁and or equipment shy閳?or worse, to lash out at hands or equipment as a way to protect them from perceived danger.

Other dogs learn to avoid being touched or handled by becoming wild, nipping and grabbing clothes, as well as jumping on people. If your dog閳ユ獨 activity level increases or becomes problematic when you try to pet, touch or restrain him, you should work with a qualified trainer that understands how to use positive reinforcement to move your dog to a place where he likes grooming, or at least will allow it.

Regardless of why or how a dog builds a sensitivity to handling, (or anything else) it閳ユ獨 always alarming when someone閳ユ獨 sweet dog all of the sudden struggles, gets wild, pulls or runs away, growls or even snaps during the course of handling, or petting.

No matter how disquieting, it is important to respond, not react if your dog displays any of these behaviors. If your dog has resorted to using one of these stronger statements, you can be sure that the communications have broken down somewhere along the line and it閳ユ獨 time to get busy with rebuilding your relationship.

Since your dog has gone 閳ユ笝ver the top閳?and is biting, you will want to contact a qualified behavior and training consultant to help you.

This can be done! I also had a dog that attacked the brush and now he will lie down on his side and let me brush is whole body.

I have a 13 lb. Pom, he only likes to be brushed on his back %26amp; belly. So I give him a childrens benidril. Not everyday. Then I brush his back %26amp; belly, while he relaxes. Then I go to his hiney %26amp; tail, where all the tangels %26amp; mats are. I use a small wire brush about 3'' wide, found at Pet Smart. Use a good conditioner. I love Tropiclean. It works great. Found at Petco. If matts are too bad take her to a groomer %26amp; have her shaved down. Then gently brush her everyday while her hair grows back. Without the matts the experience will be more enjoyable. She will begin to like it. If all this fails, then go to muzzle.
