My dog is plagued with small black flying insects. They seem to be like fruit flies but they hide in

He is a mongrel in good health and he had all his injections.

I live in Borneo in the tropics.

His eyes are now getting mucus in the corners in the mornings.

Around his back and rear end he has very flaky skin also, but apart from this he has a lovely thick coat of hair on him.

Take him to the vet he could have a skin problem / infection and the flies are attracted to that, as you say he has flaky skin this could cause a small infection. Go to your vet

Give him a nice gentle bath. (Flea shampoo) Don't get it in his eyes.

Check his skin all over and look for one of two things:

(1) An open sore (could be he was originally injured and the bugs made it worse and now it is infected..I'm suspicious this is the case due to the mucus in his eyes) In this worse case scenerino you will need to cleanse the wound and he will need antibiotic medication from the vet.

(2) Sticky stuff (food got on him/give him a bath)

I love dogs and I'm sorry yours is having this problem.

if they're jumping they are definitely fleas if they fly i don't know

Wash him down for now because anything biting him constantly can make him very weak and possibly die....

Then you need to get him to a vet ASAP.

Hope all goes well.

I would bathe him quickly. You need to kill as much of them as you can right now. I've heard you can use dishwashing soap (but don't do this frequently as it will dry his coat out further) and leave it on for about five minutes. Get all of the soap off. Then, you definately need to take him to the vet and get a flea %26amp; tick medication like Advantage or Frontline. This works with a lot of other bugs like lice AND ticks and fleas. He needs some kind of preventative since you guys are in the tropics.

It should clear up after you take action, but like stated before, it needs to be immediately because the constant biting and itching can cause deadly infection and if they're fly-like, I'm sure there might be larvae and such that they could lay in the wounds. That's really not good.

In conclusion, wash him, take him to the vet to get checked, and get flea %26amp; tick meds from the vet.
