My dog has started chewing her butt. It's not like a hot spot. Where she has chewed the hair off, her skin is very hard and very sticky and only in that spot. I checked the rest of her and nothing else is hard. It's right on her butt and part of her tail. Anyone know what it could be? I called my vet but he doesn't have an appointment for a little over a week!
Anyone know much about what makes a dog chew their skin? The skin is hard and sticky where she has chewed.?
Until you can get to the vet, take the dog to a groomer and have them shave the chewed area. Once it's clean you should be able to see if there is something under her skin or if she's been hurt and is just keeping it from healing. Also try a different vet maybe?

Sorry, but it kind of sounds like a hot spot to me. If I were you, I'd try another vet who actually has appointments.

Maybe a flea allergy.. Does she have fleas???

Allergy's is the leading cause of skin irritations.
Taker her to the vet and they can test to see exactly what it is that she's allergic to

Fleas and flea allergies are always the first suspect for chewing and itching the bottom. Severe food allergy reaction can also cause similar chewing and biting. I suggest first putting Frontline Plus or Advantage on your dog if you have not already done so. Secondly, I would suggest getting an E-collar (you know, those lampshades) and putting it on until you get to the vet, to help minimize secondary skin infection from the licking.

My dog has the same problem. The most likely thing is that she/he has fleas. Flea bathe him/her. Also give regular baths regularly. I'd still take the appointment to make sure.

maybe she needs her anal glands expressed?
it could also be parasites...
or allergies.. anything from food to airborne things like mold and aresols.
it could be a infection or fungus... not too sure. have your vet run some tests on that part of the skin

I wonder about fleas too, but as others have already made suggestings for that problem, my next question would be what is your dog eating? If you bought it at the grocery store, it isn't very good. If you got it at a large chain pet store, it may not be much better. Get a subscription to Whole Dog Journal, which is all about healthy food and dog health in general. Link below

my friends dog did the same thing when his buddy died (their other dog) The vet told her that some dogs do this when they are sad or under alot of stress and gave her "doggy prozac". They also had to put one of those goofy lamp shades around the dogs head until the spots he chewed were healed.
