New Pom puppy losing hair?

I have an 8 week old pom puppy (female) and we have had her for about a week. She is black, and looks like she has dandruff, so I am thinking she has dry skin, as she is also itching a lot, (I checked for fleas, didn't find any.) she seems to be losing some hair around her eyes (sounds wierd, but its true!) I had a shampoo I used on her 4 days ago, it is one I had bought for my chow dog, but I think now that it was too harsh on her. Any recommendations as to what I can use to relieve her itching and dry skin? Thanks!

Hair loss around the eyes is a classic symptom of mites. Demodex usually cause this hairloss pattern, but it may also be sarcoptes. Your vet will do a skin scraping, although mites, especially sarcoptes, can be very difficult to find. Because of this, many vets diagnose based on symptoms. There is disagreement in the veterinary medical community on treatment of demodex. Some treat with ivermectin, some believe in waiting to see if it resolves on it's own. Your vet will be able to recommend the best plan after s/he looks at your puppy. The itching is enough to drive both the dog and you crazy, I know, but there's not too much you can do about that, since steroids are contraindicated in parasite infections, and nothing else really works. They may give you something like a Benzoil peroxide shampoo to use, but you're pretty much just going to have to live through it for awhile. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that with all that itching, your puppy may lose weight, since they burn up more calories with all the scratching and generally just being uncomfortable. Make sure your puppy is eating a really high quality diet (especially since demodex problems can be a sign of immune system disorders), and talk to your vet about the signs of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which is sometimes a problem even in healthy toy breeds, due to their higher metabolism. Good luck!

take ur puppy to the vet

My puppy(lab mix) has the same thing. I took him to the vet yesterday and the vet said it was caused by mites. He said it is very common in puppies from shelters and it should heal by itself. However, I am taking my puppy back in a week to see if there will need to be any medications prescribed.

Where did you get your puppy? 7 weeks is way to young. He should have been at least 9 weeks before he was seperated from his mother.

I would take it in to your vet to have a skin scraping performed. Poss could be demodex mites. Or maybe even simple as a reaction to the shampoo you used.

Good Luck.

Sulfodine shampoo.

And make sure she is flealess. Just because you can't see them. doesn;t mean they are not their!

If it doesn't clear up, take her to a vet and have her checked for mange mites.

It could be fleas, mites, scabies, or mange.. all of which should be treated by a vet, and your vet is the only one , really, who can give you a diagnosis . If you've had her for a week, and not had her into the vet, yet, you really should take her. It could be something much more devastating than just a skin condition, especially if you got her from someone other than a reputable breeder.

Good luck! I hope she's better soon!

Sounds like she could have skin mites. Take her to your vet and have him/her do a skin scraping and check under the microscope. If test is positive, PLEASE follow vet directions carefully as mites can spread to your other dogs if sarcoptic. If demodectic, they can be difficult to cure.
